Metadata and Harvesting

The International Journal of Disaster Risk Management (IJDRM) supports open scholarly communication, machine-readable metadata, persistent identification, interoperability, and automated metadata harvesting by academic databases, libraries, repositories, indexing services, aggregators, and scholarly discovery platforms.

DOI and Crossref Metadata

IJDRM assigns persistent Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to published articles.

DOI Registration Infrastructure: Crossref

Article DOI records provide persistent identification and facilitate citation linking, scholarly discovery, metadata exchange, and interoperability with academic information systems.

IJDRM article DOIs follow the journal's DOI structure, for example:

DOI information is also included in the journal's article-level metadata and OAI-PMH records.

OAI-PMH Metadata Harvesting

IJDRM provides public machine-readable metadata through the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH), Version 2.0.

The OAI-PMH interface is provided through the journal's Open Journal Systems (OJS) publishing platform.

Supported Metadata Formats

The IJDRM OAI-PMH repository currently exposes metadata in the following formats:

Dublin Core

Metadata prefix: oai_dc

Dublin Core provides standardized bibliographic metadata suitable for harvesting by repositories, indexing platforms, academic discovery services, and library systems.

OAI MARC

Metadata prefix: oai_marc

OAI MARC provides bibliographic metadata in a MARC-oriented format for compatible information systems.

MARCXML

Metadata prefix: marcxml

MARCXML provides MARC 21 bibliographic information in XML format and supports interoperability with compatible library and cataloguing systems.

JATS

Metadata prefix: jats

IJDRM also exposes metadata using the Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS) format.

JATS supports structured scholarly publishing metadata and interoperability between journals, repositories, databases, publishing platforms, and scholarly information services.

RFC 1807

Metadata prefix: rfc1807

RFC 1807 metadata are also available through the IJDRM OAI-PMH interface.

Article-Level Metadata

Published IJDRM article records contain structured bibliographic metadata including, where available:

  • article title;

  • author names;

  • abstract;

  • keywords;

  • publication date;

  • journal title;

  • volume and issue;

  • page range;

  • Digital Object Identifier (DOI);

  • article URL;

  • Print ISSN;

  • Online ISSN;

  • publication language;

  • document type;

  • publication status;

  • publisher information;

  • copyright information;

  • Creative Commons licence information; and

  • links to published article files.

These metadata facilitate reliable identification, discovery, citation, indexing, harvesting, and long-term scholarly interoperability.

Persistent Article Identification

Published articles are identified through both:

  • persistent DOI identifiers; and

  • permanent article URLs within the IJDRM publishing platform.

Where a DOI has been assigned, the DOI should be regarded as the primary persistent scholarly identifier.

Open Access and Licensing Metadata

IJDRM is an open-access scholarly journal.

Published article metadata contain copyright and licensing information. Articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0) where indicated on the individual article record.

The CC BY 4.0 licence permits sharing and adaptation of the licensed material provided that appropriate attribution is given in accordance with the licence terms.

Metadata Harvesting and Reuse

IJDRM encourages the harvesting and reuse of bibliographic metadata by:

  • academic indexing and abstracting databases;

  • university and institutional repositories;

  • national and international library catalogues;

  • scholarly search engines;

  • research information systems;

  • metadata aggregators;

  • discovery platforms;

  • citation databases;

  • preservation services; and

  • other scholarly communication infrastructures.

Bibliographic metadata describing IJDRM publications may be harvested, indexed, stored, and redistributed for legitimate scholarly communication, bibliographic, discovery, preservation, citation-linking, and research purposes.

Metadata harvesters are encouraged to use the journal's official OAI-PMH endpoint as the primary machine-readable harvesting interface.

Metadata Quality and Interoperability

IJDRM aims to maintain consistent bibliographic information across:

  • the journal website;

  • individual article landing pages;

  • OAI-PMH records;

  • DOI metadata;

  • Crossref-related metadata services; and

  • external indexing and scholarly discovery systems.

Metadata may be updated when bibliographic corrections, author information, DOI information, publication details, or other article-level information require amendment.

Because OAI-PMH metadata are generated dynamically from the journal publishing platform, external services are encouraged to periodically re-harvest IJDRM metadata in order to obtain updated records.

Technical Platform

IJDRM uses Open Journal Systems (OJS), developed by the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), for journal publishing and metadata management.

The platform provides standards-based scholarly publishing infrastructure and supports OAI-PMH metadata harvesting and multiple metadata exchange formats.
